What is the most popular hairstyles today?

Q. I would like to know what kind of hairstyles is the most popular for boys today.

A. Do you like the movie the Hunger Games? I haven't seen it, but I saw it briefly during their trailer. My hairstyle (for weeks) came from the movie, and have seen them last week during Dancing with the Stars. Dayana Mendoza the Miss Universe, recently on the Apprentice had that same hairstyle, & recently Florence Welch wore her hair during the Met Gala. Google her. Took about 10 mins. to do, use bobby pins to secure the braids to your head. Magazines called that the Goddess look or the Halo crown.

Starlets like Rihanna, Blake Lively, Jessica Alba, Lea Michele and Scarlett Johansson have been spotted recently sporting braids. Perhaps the most influential trendsetter, however, is "The Hunger Games'" fictional heroine Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence, who wears her hair in an intricate side braid throughout the film that was a huge springtime hit.
About a half-dozen dedicated stylists do between 40 and 50 braids a week at John Barrett Salon in New York. The salon opened its braid bar in June 2011 and offers a menu with nine braids. At first stylists at John Barrett thought the braid was just a fleeting trend or easy summer style, but then it blew up, salon spokeswoman Jenna Goldate said.
"Now we're really seeing it everywhere," Goldate said. "Everybody started to wear braids in more modern and different ways. It's not your traditional braid. It's a modern take on it."

What are hairstyles for black women in the summer heat?
Q. Ok so I don't want to wear weave and I don't have a perm so my hair doesn't stay straight in the summertime. I want cute hairstyles that I can manage myself wit my shoulder length hair. Any suggestions?

A. Google: "Why Viola Davis Ditched the Wig at the Oscars"

I do not recommend weaves or perms which causes cancer.
HAIR WEAVES & BRAIDS: Some hairstyles, including tight braids and weaves, may increase the risk of developing an irreversible form of scarring hair loss, according to a new study in the Archives of Dermatology.
Seen predominately in African-American women, this type of hair loss, central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, centers on the vertex (crown) of the scalp and spreads peripherally.
Any style that causes too much tension and traction on the hair, such as braiding with artificial hair weaved in, can possibly lead to scarring hair loss, says study author Angela Kyei, MD, a dermatologist at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.
In the study, 326 African-American women answered questionnaires about their hair-grooming methods, health status, and other demographic information. Dermatologists then performed a scalp examination to grade hair loss.
Nearly 60% of the women showed signs of advanced central hair loss with scarring. The women were also more likely to have type 2 diabetes and bacterial scalp infections, and sport hair styles associated with traction, including braids and weaves, the study showed.
But hair loss is permanent, meaning that we can inject steroids or creams but it won't bring your hair back, so its very important to seek help with dermatologists early on, she says.

Hair straighteners are known as hair relaxers, keratin treatments and hair-smoothing products. They work by breaking and reforming the chemical bonds in keratin, which is the main protein that gives shape to each hair.

Five months ago, the federal government put out a hazard alert about the hair-smoothing treatment, Brazilian Blowout etc. warning that it contains liquid formaldehyde that can turn into formaldehyde gas when heated during a treatment. Now, the company's bottles of solution carry a warning label to alert stylists to the potential formaldehyde risk and the need to perform the treatment in a well-ventilated area. The manufacturer said Monday (3-6-12) that it had agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit for about $4.5 million.

Hair-straightening products are allowed to contain small concentrations of formaldehyde (0.2 percent). But several hair-straightening solutions have been found to contain well above the allowable limit. For example, one popular hair-straightening product that advertised itself as formaldehyde-free actually contained 6.8 percent to 11.8 percent formaldehyde.

BTW: A variety of hair-straightening products used in professional salons can expose both hairdressers and their customers to formaldehyde. The results show that three professional hair-smoothing treatments labeled "formaldehyde free" can produce the cancer-causing chemical at concentrations above the occupational exposure limits set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. They tested four products: Coppola Keratin Complex Blonde Formula, Global Keratin Juvexin Optimized Functional Keratin, La Brasiliana Escluso Keratin Treatment with Collagen, and Brazilian Blowout Acai Professional Smoothing Solution. While ChemRisk tested four popular brands of hair straighteners, there are hundreds on the market. Nov. 11-11

By contrast, beauty salon owners and stylists generally lack a scientific background and don't have a keen awareness of the danger of working with products that contain formaldehyde, experts say.

Chemicals can enter the body through the skin.

Can everyday damage make curly hair curlier and kinkier?
Q. It seems to have happened to me. I was wondering because I am planning on shaving my head this summer to start fresh, but the amount of curl in my hair is making me think that maybe I shouldn't do it in case it grows out really curly. So when my healthy hair grows out, will it likely be less curly?

A. Using heat damaging tools will definatley make hair frizzy, kinky and look pretty bad. Instead of shaving your head, you can use large to jumbo sized rollers, which will make your hair look much nicer. User the plastic type of rollers. Roll your hair when it is wet with hair gel.

The best and popular method for todays modern styles, especially with hard to curl or really curly, straight, fine, thick or frizzy hair, is to use rollers. Young gals are now using rollers to achieve the modern styles that you see around now. Heat tools are terrible for your hair and cause damage. The big companies that manufacture their hair appliances want to convince you that their heat generating hair appliances are better, because they make lots of money from them. There are different types of rollers, depending on what you want to achieve and your hair type. The popular roller types are Velcro, plastic, and brush. You can also use sponge rollers for sleeping. For volume or straightening, use large to jumbo sized. For some curl, try using medium sized rollers. If you want volume on the top and curl below, use large rollers on the crown and medium sized rollers on the sides. Roll your hair wet with some styling get and secure the rollers with clips.
. To dry your hair quickly, use a bonnet type of hair dryer, or just let them air dry. Many gals roll their hair at bedtime and take them out in the morning, which makes styling really fast.
.
Take a look at my profile picture. It only took me 15 minutes to set my hair in rollers at night, then 20 minutes in the morning to remove the rollers and style it out. You can do the same thing for any hairstyle you would like. Have some fun and try different styles!! Dont get discouraged. It takes some patience at first with putting the rollers in neatly.

You can get rollers at store like walmart, but they sell out quickly because they are so popular now. You can also buy them online.

This popular yahoo group has tons of pictures for the latest 2010/2011 hairstyles without adds or pop ups. It can take some patience, because there are so many different styles to view. The link is below.

What kind of tanning bed lotion should I use?
Q. Okay, so I'm wanting to start going to the tanning bed (yes i know they're bad) for about 5-10 mins about 3 days a week. I've never been in a tanning bed before, but I want to get just a nice tan not bahama mama tan, just so im not so white this summer. What are the best (if any) kinds of tanning bed lotion for begginning tanners with fair skin?

A. My advice? DON'T.

I'll let Lisa & Glenna tell you about tanning beds.
Google Lisa and see what she looks like 2010.
"Plastic Week: Lisa Gastineau On The Dangers Of Tanning Beds"

She had 2-3 melanoma moles removed, one by her nose. She had nose surgery just to get her nose straighter, so she can breath again. She got those moles from a tanning bed.

Tanning beds aged you by 10-15 years!
Google A Death by Suntan by age 26, Yahoo Shine 3-23-10. In April 2005, while working out at her college gym in Rhode Island, 22-year-old Glenna Kohl detected a hard, golf ball-size lump near her groin. . . . .In high school, Glenna did have an irregular mole removed from her leg. A pathology report identified it as benign, but the surgeon tested it again. The lab had made an error: The mole was an early stage melanoma.

Tanning comes & go, unless you do them everyday 24/7 for the rest of your life. But in the end the only thing you'll benefit is either moles, freckles, skin tags or discolorations from sunscreens, lotions, etc. and the more you do, the more they get larger, darker & bumpier. My nephew had a membership in a tanning bed salon for a year. After it expired, he stopped, now he's as white as before he began.

Tanning, is a result for 'damaged skin' and no products can reverse you from skin cancer or damaged skin, may prevent you from pre-mature aging, but that's part of the billion dollar beauty industry.
A new study conducted by the Indiana University School of Medicine Department of Dermatology has found that tanning bed exposure can be dangerous when tanners self-diagnose skin problems and use the radiation to treat skin eruptions. The study specifically found that a tanning bed user that used the radiation to treat a mild skin rash caused by an ibuprofen allergy developed a much more severe reaction called toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). When left untreated, TEN can be fatal.
Melanoma is the leading cause of death from skin disease. An estimated 76,259 new cases of skin cancer will be reported particularly among women in their 20's & 30's, and that's 6,020 more than 2011, people died from the disease, according to the National Cancer Institute. Two million people are diagnosed with skin cancer in the US each year, according to the EPA's Sun-Wise Program. That's more than breast, colon, lung and prostate cancer cases combine!

Watch Mirror, Mirror when the evil queen played by Julia Roberts wanted to look as fair as the princess played by Lily Collins. I came from a vacay in Ireland, and many of the people there working in the profession (luxury hotels and banks, etc.) have beautiful white complexion!

Or Google Catherine Zeta Jones - she's 42 with beautiful skin.
Watch The Duchess - Keira Knightly has flawless complexion - a natural beauty.
Taylor Swift is another starlet with beautiful skin, in her 20's.

I've been protecting myself from the sun since age 9, but no matter, I got Discoid Lupus. Google that one. It was like someone punched my chin and it gave a purplish mark. It took 12 years for that to fade, so now I'm using a wide brim hat or umbrella for protection. Gene Simmons & Shannon both have been seen hold an umbrella during an event. They were invented before beauty products, for a reason. Google also Bullous Pemphegoid, photos, another skin disorder.
